Sprains and Strains
What are sprains and strains?
- Sprains occur when a ligament is overstretched - ‘going over' on your ankle is a common cause of a sprain; often involving steps or high shoes.
- Strains occur when muscles or tendons are torn or damaged - muscles that feel sore and painful after over-use, at the gym for example, may be strained.
Symptoms include pain, swelling and bruising around the site of the injury.
How do I treat a sprain or strain?
To help reduce swelling, rest and elevate the limb and apply a bag of frozen peas (wrapped in a towel) or ice pack over the affected area for 10 to 20 minutes.
Try a painkilling gel like Ibuleve Gel or Ibuleve Maximum Strength Gel for fast, effective pain relief. Ibuleve will also help to reduce the inflammation.
