Types of Arthritis
- Common arthritic conditions are the more common and milder types of arthritis. They are associated with persistent or recurring mild to moderate joint pain and can often be self-medicated without the need for regular supervision by your GP.
- Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, and is caused when wear and tear of the joint, wears away the cartilage which covers the bone at the joint. Common symptoms include pain, stiffness and swelling of the joint which is most evident on waking in the morning.
- Rheumatoid arthritis is the second most common form of arthritis in the UK. This involves inflammation within the joints, and although the symptoms can be very similar to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis may be accompanied by other symptoms such as loss of appetite and generally feeling unwell.
Gentle exercise can help to loosen the joint, although overdoing it can make things worse. Check with your GP before undertaking a new exercise regime.
